Cast in Honor The Chronicles of Elantra Book 11 edition by Michelle Sagara Literature Fiction eBooks

Just finished Cast in Honor and loved it! For those who haven't read any books in this series, this book is not the place to start. So I'm forging ahead for those readers who have read some, if not all the books in this world.

First, the positives, and why I enjoyed it (spoilers ahead). For starters, I am loving getting to know Annarion and Mandoran. Their sibling disagreements and interactions with Teela leave me smiling every time. I feel there is definite character development here; we are learning more and more about these unique Barrani and what makes them so special. Additionally, we begin to get a glimpse into Aerian society... well, more of a tease really, but tantalizing none the less as it's the one race that hasn't been even mysteriously alluded to. Another strength that engaged me had to do with the concept of time and shadows - this was explored quite a bit in book, forcing me to question what I thought I previously knew about the shadows and the parameters of the world. I'm wondering if this will probably come into play in future books because of the length that was devoted to this theme. However, even if it doesn't, it keeps me on my toes because nothing can be taken for granted. Another plus has to be the snark factor, which kept me quite a bit entertained. Michelle certainly knows how to extract maximum amusement from the interplay of her characters and in such a way I don't tire of it. Oh, and the epilogue! No cliffhanger, (I detest when an author feels they have to leave you hanging for a year or longer) but enough of a long time coming conversation that I hate having to wait to see where that goes.

Also, I should mention that compared to some of the other books in this series, it was more sedate in the action category. Not necessarily a bad thing *if* we are compensated by some serious character development.

And that leads me to the reasons why I can't quite give this book five stars. Had this book been 4 or 5 of the series, I probably would have given it five stars. But it isn't; it is the 11th. It frustrates me to no end that Kaylin, our main character, is still whining, still clueless, and still static. Yes, we have learned the backstories of numerous supporting characters, and don't get me wrong, this allows the books to stay interesting, but supporting characters cannot replace progression and growth by the main character. Kaylin has been through so much and yet, she still hasn't learned. She still bumbles, still acts on instinct, and still can't recreate anything she has done. Enough is enough! After ten books, she should growing, gaining the respect of her peers, and most importantly, learning about what she can and cannot do. Yes, she is about relationships. We get that. However, it is growing cloying repetitious. I sincerely hope the epilogue is a taste of growth for Kaylin and that the next few books transition Kaylin from inherent ignorance to at least a limited, working knowledge of something. I'm flexible with what that something might be (magic, her marks, her abilities, etc) as long as something progresses.

So that's it. Despite my rant above, I know I'll be reading the next book (because those secondary characters do so seriously rock), and hopefully Michelle will get the next book done soon.

3 stars 5 for gorgeous world- and character-building, minus 2 for a few excruciatingly awful scenes.

I LOVED 90% of "Cast in Honor," from the crusty dragon personalities to Small and Squawky's earlobe nips. Sagara has an lush imagination and her characters are deep and vivid. That said... she’s driving me crazy with the excruciatingly dull but critical scenes where Kaylin manipulates "True Words" or "True Names" to resolve magical crises. Sagara’s vision for these scenes just isn’t translating to the page--which she seems to realize it because they go on and on while she keeps trying to explain “how it works.” Those scenes just wear me out.

True Words or True Names are magically potent words originally used as life-creating building blocks by Ancients (think interdimensional literary atoms). They are the foundation for magical beings from winged aerians to crotchety Leontines to sentient buildings who conform to the needs of their inhabitants. Evidently the Ancients knew their creations would need occasional upkeep, so periodically a human or immortal is magically “Chosen” to handle issues pertaining to the Words. As a teenager, Kaylin is transformed from normal human to magical human--tattooed runes appearing all over her body. She comes to understand that the runes are True Words that she can use to heal human injury, repair magical creations, fend off magical mayhem, and even complete the transformation process of magical creatures who have more than one stage of being.

As always in this type of fantasy, Kaylin is feisty but clueless magical heroine who frequently finds herself at the end of the rope, when suddenly her power manifests and she can fix the problem... but later has no idea how she did it. Frankly, neither do I because after I slog through each lengthy scene describing Kaylin crossing dimensional barriers and using her magical "Fill in the Blank with a True Word" skills, I realize I either didn’t understand the scene or ceased caring how she did it somewhere in the middle. At first I thought the scenes were over my head and I was being obtuse, but I'm normally a pretty savvy reader. So, after Book 11, I decided it really is just the writing of these scenes. And "Cast in Honor" has more of those scenes than any other book in the series except "Cast in Sorrow."

Bottom line I love it the books, but the series would benefit from an editorial chopping-block session to help Sagara clarify and cut down the True Word/Name scenes, smooth out awkward transitions, fix odd word usage, and clarify identification during character dialog. I’m giving “COH” 3 stars.
I have read this series from the beginning and have always enjoyed its unique world, and the main character Kaylin. We first met Kaylin when she was very young. I enjoyed the most recent book because it seemed to me that she was approaching self confident adulthood. However, in this volume she seems to be sliding back to childhood both in her own eyes and in the view of those she works with. Kaylin has repeatedly saved various groups of people that live in her vacinity, then the kingdom, and the fabric of reality. Yes she has mysterious powers that come without a manual, but how many times do you have to save the day to be viewed as competent.? Or as an adult? How many times do you have to rescue the whole town before you are raised in rank and salary?

The character of Kaylin comes from a traumatic background which is accounts for some of her self doupt. But leading a life which atones for past mistakes, and repeatedly putting herself on the line to protect others should eventually lead to more trust both from herself and the powers around her. The series seemed to be moving in that direction until now. Now she has stalled and we the reader with her.

I am not surprised that many of the reviews posted express frustration. After eleven books it is time for a promotion. It is time for adulthood. It is time. Knock some sense into into more of your characters Ms. Sahara. You seem to to be losing your faithful readers.
