For me a great book needs to accomplish three important things: 1. I need to care about the characters 2. I need to identify with the characters 3. I need to feel that the story made good on its promise to show how those characters grow or are changed by their experiences. From the very first chapter I was drawn into the heart and mind of Katie, a mother who suffers from the type of OCD that invades her thoughts with images of harming the child she loves. I cared about Katie and her precocious daughter Maisie and their husband/Father, Cal. As someone who has dealt with mental illness in people who are very close to me, I could identify with the frustration of those who don't understand the disease (including myself!) and how it can wreak havoc in the life of the person and those around him or her. My favorite character was actually Lilah; I enjoyed her wisdom and self-advocacy and the way she became the wizened adult in the room.In THE PROMISE BETWEEN US Barbara Claypole White manages to showcase the frustration, the vulnerability, and the shutting out of those we love while at the same time revealing the path to possible healing. I say possible because there's no big red bow tied around the conclusion. Healing is an ongoing process and the author gives the reader space to imagine what the future might hold for the characters. I look forward to reading more by this author!

I have become a fan of Barbara Claypole White! Her books are so well written , and she always gives you something to think about. The Promise Between Us certainly did teach me a lot about O.C.D. and how it affects
families and relationships. Barbara' s characters are unique and well developed. Barbara is a Brit with wit which always comes out in her story. She is a storyteller with wonderful dialogue between characters and vocabulary!
Her book The Promise Between Us meets all my requirements I learn something, A good story, Great characters, Great dialogue, and it makes me laugh!
I received this book from Net Galley for a honest review., but I also bought it.
This book does something that seems almost impossibly at odds, dealing realistically and unflinchingly with mental illness while conveying a beautiful and engaging story that doesn't come across as preachy or sensational. This is so good that it could almost be used as a primer for OCD, which is greatly misunderstood, yet it is truly a pleasurable story.
I enjoyed this very much, even as there were moments of discomfort and sadness. I attribute this to the relatable and engaging characters. This story is told from the point of view of five different characters, some featured more prominently, and this works extremely well. I enthusiastically recommend this book.
When Katelyn Mack suffers from postpartum OCD, can't get the help she needs, she leaves her daughter with her husband in order to keep her child safe, and give her a better childhood than Kate herself suffered through. I knew zip about OCD when I read this book, and BCW is a favorite writer of mine. So I went in reading for the story, which is every book's #1 aim. But I found myself feeling extreme heartache, coupled with memories of how hard motherhood is without any other issues going on. I fell in love with little Maisie, who is already exhibiting OCD when her path unexpectedly crosses with her mom, now a metal artist. Kate took up welding to overcome her fear of fire. What's remarkable is the program Kate creates for herself when she can't afford the pills and psychiatric help she needs. What a blast that was to learn. That a person can be this sick, this dysfunctional, even suicidal, and not be able to get the help she desperately needs. Everyone with mental illness needs medical care, I don't mind paying more taxes for that. I have depression and would be lost without my great doctor.
Barbara's books always show the deep bond of parenting, bravely discuss mental illness, and the crazy difficult path of love, but this one felt raw and more real to me than any other. This book is for anyone who loves mother-child stories, yes, but the OCD stuff is so real and heartbreaking, I recommend it for that alone. I'm positive I'll read this again, and that I will give it for gifts to my reader friends. A really stunning book. Unforgettable.
The Promise Between Us spoke to me on so many levels. It spoke of Katie's immense love for her daughter. Katie has Harm OCD and must leave her baby girl and husband to protect them. Years later, after treatment and getting her life somewhat back together, Katie meets Maisie. She realizes Maisie also suffers from OCD and she will move heaven and earth to protect and help her daughter. This was a book that broke my heart from the beginning and slowly put it back together again. It is a story of immense love and sacrifice. It is a story of redemption. I received an advance review copy of this book from the Great Thought's Ninja Review Team. All opinions are my own.
Once again, Barbara Claypole White trespasses on my comfort zone. There’s no froth in The Promise Between us, no light-footed dancing through an imagined tale. BCW’s books don’t skim the surface of emotional entanglements; they dig up the earth, turn it, and let us see its underside. Who are these people? Do I know them?
Could I ever be one of them?
One thing is certain, BCW creates characters I won’t soon forget, and in The Promise Between Us she hands over some priceless ones the darling Maisie; the wounded, valiant Katie; the almost too-good-to-be-true Lilah; the heart-melting Jake; the beautiful, resilient Ben; and, of course, the haunted Callum.
Even my college psych classes didn’t prepare me for the OCD lies that attacked Katie and Maisie, that actually attack real people in the real world. Barbara Claypole White has fleshed them out and given them a voice, and for this I say, thank you. Thank you for a beautifully crafted book that deserves shelf space and a reread.
