I finished this ages ago. Mid-summer, I think. I still remember liking it. Though I have no sisters, I felt I could relate to both of the sisters' points of view. As the oldest of three siblings, I had to be the responsible one taking care of the younger brothers, who were often caused their share of problems. On the other hand, I felt like the other sister in that music notes, words on paper, even how I hear words seem to be colored or animated or textured in some way that I know isn't how normal people see/hear things. I've never been diagnosed as it never was a problem. It just added layers to my understanding of the world. So I quickly identified with both sisters. It was fun that the more disabled of the sisters starts the adventure for both of them. It is unnerving for the reader to think that the one considered blind leads the way to hop the train.
For me, as I 'read' using text-to-speech, it was hard to know whose view I was seeing. I soon learned to take the time and read the chapter titles as that helped. After I got to know each of the characters, I didn't need the reference so much. The characters were well developed.
The way the trip brings to mind the siblings history gave meat to what could have been just a joy-ride.
I don't want to give any spoilers so I will just say, this is a fun book that I think many should read and enjoy.

I read this book in short order, which is always a sign for me that I've got my hands on a really good book.
In The Moon Sisters, Therese Walsh gives us a protagonist who sees the world in an unusual (and what feels, at times, like a magical) way.
Olivia Moon has synesthesia, which means that sights and sounds can trigger her other senses, too. Hope tastes like “a mix of berries” to Olivia, like “the drizzle of honey and another drizzle of lemon” and her mother smells like “the scent of clothes right off the line on a summer day, the sunshine itself.” She also has complete confidence in fate. Her outlook on the world, both physically and spiritually, sends her packing after the death of her mother and propels her on a journey of discovery as she deals with her grief.
Olivia’s sister, Jazz, sets out on the same path, traveling with her sister all the way to a place called Cranberry Glades, but more by way of rescue. Jazz is the logical one of the sisters, she believes, and is determined to bring her wandering sister home and make her face the reality of what happened to their mother. Only after they both take chances along the way, either willingly or by force of hand, do they find the truth they are looking for, along with compassion for themselves and for each other and understanding for those they love most.
Fate, logic, and chance three words that help weave this beautiful tale of grief, recovery, and relationships.
I remember when Therese Walsh’s debut novel The Last Will of Moira Leahy was released in 2009. It was wildly popular, but I was especially touched as a fellow author by the way she reached out to writers through her blog and writing community Writer Unboxed. She’s an inspiring person, besides being an excellent author, so I was thrilled to learn that she released The Moon Sisters a few months ago, just in time for me to download it on my new .
It isn’t often that a writer comes along who can draw readers in and write beautiful prose at the same time. Much of the time, authors are either great at writing beautiful prose or they are terrific at storytelling. Neither way is bad, but when an author is really great at both, a novel can really sing. That’s how Therese Walsh is, making The Moon Sisters a novel that drew me in and left me feeling reflective, touched, and hopeful. Her writing is beautiful and her characters, Jazz and Olivia, are real, honest, quirky, and even funny at times.
As an author myself, one of my favorite aspects of the novel was the thread about writing. The mother of Jazz and Olivia was a writer and she struggled with being able to finish her story. In so many ways it touched me. The longer I write, the more I understand just how much our personal lives affect our writing and this was how it was for the mother in The Moon Sisters. I loved how effortlessly this thread in the novel was woven into the rest of the story, so that it wasn’t a novel about writing at all, but about relationships, unresolved conflict, and learning to let go of the past. I absolutely loved The Moon Sisters.
Practical twenty-two-year-old Jazz has always been burdened with watching over her special needs younger sister. Olivia has synesthesia a neurological condition in which sufferers experience sensory overload, like tasting numbers or seeing colors, causing distraction and at times interfering with the ability to experience life in conformity with others. When their often-agoraphobic, depressed mother (likely) commits suicide, Olivia seeks out on a quest to fulfill her mother's dreams. As always, Jazz is sent to look out for her sister. Each bearing some of their mother's secrets, the sisters' old resentments come to light. To complicate matters, Olivia just might be falling in love with a train hopper, a self proclaimed untrustworthy hobo who promises to take her to the place of her mother's dream.
I absolutely identified and fell in love with Jazz, the less loved, older child lost in the shuffle behind her selfish, narcissistic younger sister. Olivia wasn't a bad person, their mother over-identified with her, favored her, and excused her behavior without consequence. Olivia never learned to consider the impact of her behavior on others. Therese Walsh did a magnificent job writing both POVs distinctly--Olivia's filled with vivid imagery and metaphors, Jazz's more practical, but also with a strong voice. Also included were their mother's unsent letters to her father.
There were some unexpected twists I didn't see coming, but that made logical and satisfactory sense. I wasn't especially fond of the end (no spoilers), but still whole heartedly recommend THE MOON SISTERS, which would be a great book club choice. I will definitely read more Therese Walsh in the future,
