Sounds like Agatha is assessing a bit more than murder these days, and showing her soft side. And it was harder to determine who the victim/victims was/were in this one. I think Toni is a good addition to the team. Like all of M.C. Beaton's books, I didn't want to stop reading until I finished it, and this is my second reading of it. Rereading is my way of immersing myself in all of the wonderful details that I may have missed on the first frantic reading, when it was more about solving the murder. That's why I buy the books of the writers I love. I like getting to know the characters better with each reading.Tags : Kissing Christmas Goodbye (Agatha Raisin Mysteries, No. 18) [M. C. Kissing Christmas Goodbye Agatha Raisin Mysteries No 18 M C Beaton 9780312349110 Books Reviews
Have read every Agatha book--so much fun to read about this outrageous smart woman who is so self-centered but so human and lovable. If you are a cozy mystery fan, don't miss this series!
I prefer other MC Beaton books but how can one pass up on a mystery. Agatha Raisin novels follow a simple format of Agatha bumbling her way into solving a crime while embarrassing herself especially in her infatuation with James. The author has introduced more characters as the series has grown and these characters help balance out Agatha's strong character. Buy it or not? Depends on your love of mysteries and your experience with earlier novels of Agatha Raisin since the stories do reflect back on past plots. I would give it a go.
Agatha Raisin is at her best, yet again in this new book. These reads are the best. Agatha is trying, once again, by the most outrageous means to entice a man. Christmas is but another opportunity for her to weave her spell on an unsuspecting and totally uninterested man. Laughs and head shaking and some more laughs are the results of reading Agatha Raisin and her thinking that always backfires in the most outrageous ways!!!!!
I was so excited about getting this Agatha Raisin series book to read -- at Christmas time, no less -- because I love the series and Agatha. Unfortunatley, I was disappointed. For me, the humor wasn't as funny as in previous books, and the plot (never a strong point in this series) was wafer thin (I am reminded of the quote of a critic who said that to call the plot wafer thin was to insult wafer manufacturers everywhere). I read at the book, but it was definitely not a pageturner for me.
The one good part was a new character, who shows considerable promise. She gives us a glimpse of what Agatha may have been like at 18.
I love Agatha Charles James Mrs.Bloxly Bill Wong Toni etc and I read the stories for them. I could care less about the mysteries. Maybe Ms Beaton could could just write about them. They are fabulous characters. Thank yoi Ms. Beaton.
The feisty and ferocious Agatha Raisin is back in her 17th adventure with all the charm of a snappy pit bull. Jealous and cranky, yet incredibly kind and generous, Agatha's vulnerability has won her legions of fan who will enjoy this, one of the best in the series. Not only is there a country house mystery, but the Christmas setting adds charm as Agatha prepares to celebrate her best Christmas ever with friends, snow, yuletide decorations, and hopefully, James Lacey at her side.
The brightest spot in the novel may be the addition of a new character, teenage Toni Gilmour, whose background is eerily akin to that of Agatha. Toni may be the anti-Agatha young, beautiful, vivacious, charming and clever. Despite Agatha's occasional bursts of jealousy, the two women are friends as well as fellow detectives and Agatha's incredible generosity in helping Toni softens the many hard edges she still exhibits.
Mrs. Tamworthy, matriarch of a highly dysfunctional family, hires Agatha to find the person who is attempting to kill her. More murders follow as Agatha is both friend and enemy to the Tamworthy heirs. There are red herrings aplenty before she finally cracks the case and can enjoy hosting her Christmas party. Will she get the snow she longs for and will James Lacey be the man she dreams he can be?
Long-time readers will enjoy visits from Bill Wong, Roy Silver, Sir Charles Fraith, Mrs. Bloxby (and even a deeper look at Alf Bloxby) and another cameo appearance by James Lacey. Two big questions remain to tease readers at the end is Agatha really over James and has Bill Wong found the girl of his dreams at last? Can't wait for the next installment!
At last some "milk of human kindness" begins to flow in Agatha's veins. In a previous interview I had said that she had none. She runs into a young girl who is pathetically like she was as a child with a horrible family. She is stirred to take this girl under her wing and it makes a wonderful story. Of course there is also a very interesting mystery with many interesting characters. I'm beginning to believe that Beacon has no equal in creating interesting characters. And, the lessening of Agatha's obsession with James continues. She is finally growing up I guess.
