I usually love Dianne Chamberlain books. Necessary Lies was one of my favorite books ever. But The Escape Artist fell very, very
Short. First - many characters were simply dislikable. Others seemed oblivious and sometimes down right stupid. I understand the story takes place in 1997, but I felt that the whole establishment of a false ID was glossed over and over simplified. The big mystery of the file felt odd and poorly constructed- particularly looking back once you know the identity of the bomber. Finally, the ending is horrible. It felt like she hit her deadline, and rather than the 2 or 3 chapters the story needed to wrap up well, she wrote a paragraph and called it good. I usually finish her books a bit sad that my time with the characters is over. This time, I was glad to see them go.

The Escape Artist edition by Diane Chamberlain Romance eBooks Reviews

When Susanna Miller loses custody of her 11-month old son Tyler to her ex-husband Jim and his new wife Peggy, she is afraid that her life is over.

From the moment she first discovered that Jim was cheating on her with Peggy, right after she discovered she was pregnant, she has been in free fall, descending into the darkness that will soon become her life.

Her best friend Linc Sebastian, who lived next door to her in childhood and has now become her lover and her support system, believes that they can somehow make it anyway.

But what Susanna does next will change all of their lives.

She has planned ahead, and the morning of the day she was supposed to turn over Tyler, she is on the run, with a new identity, some cash, and a plan. Her journey takes her across country from Boulder, Colorado, to Annapolis, Maryland, where she slowly begins anew as Kimberly Stratton.

The Escape Artist was a riveting story that had a few implausible twists and turns, but I couldn't stop reading it. Soon I was immersed with Kimberly in her new life with her new friends, like an artist named Adam Soria and his sister Jessie. And in her cute apartment in an old Victorian, she finds support from her new landlady Ellen and her neighbor Lucy.

But the secrets she must hide keep her from truly connecting, and then she makes a dark discovery that seems to threaten the new life and bring everything to a screeching halt.

What is the meaning of the strange file Kim has found on the used computer she bought? What happened the night someone broke into her apartment, making her feel totally unsafe again?

In the end, everything fell into place pretty neatly, and while I was happy with the conclusions, it all felt a little bit unlikely. Still an enjoyable read for fans of Chamberlain and for all those who can relate to family/custody situations. 4.0 stars.
I loved this book, extremely interesting to me. Won't get into details, many have done that some time ago. I have questions!
POSS SPOILER ALERT ~~ it seemed ar the end, there were unanswered questions, for me anyway, such as how was Adam supposed to do w/o Kim, esp when his sister, he was so close to, just died in such dramatic circumstances? She was nuttier than a fruitcake, but that wasn't really made clear at all til the end. He had so recently been deeply depressed over losing his fam in a terrible accident. Did they somehow stay in contact? What happened to the cat and kittens? Did Susanne and Linc get married? There were a couple more things, but now I can't rem them! It did seem the whole story came to an abrupt ending, like Diane was in a rush to get it over, that's how it struck me. I give this 4 stars because of the frustration I feel.
Let me say at the beginning that this book is a page-turner, so I'm not going to give it a bad review. But I do have an issue with the basic premise of the story.

A young mother, Susanna, runs away with her infant son (named Tyler) when custody is awarded to her ex-husband. Susanna had been at a disadvantage in court because her ex-husband was an attorney and had money. He successfully argued that he and his new wife could give Tyler a better home because they were financially, as well as emotionally, more stable than the child's mother. It's impossible not to be sympathetic with Susanna. She sacrificed her own education to put her husband through law school, and one day when she excitedly hurried home to tell him she was pregnant, she found him in bed with another woman.

My problem with the premise of the story is, it seems the author doesn't even question the mother's decision to run away with her child. I agree the judge's ruling was unjust and heartbreaking for Susanna. She loved Tyler while her ex-husband was indifferent. He only fought for custody because his new wife couldn't have children and wanted to raise Tyler. However, what quality of life could Susanne provide for her son by running away with him? It's not as if she was protecting Tyler from an abusive father. Indifferent, yes, but not abusive. And in fact, the stepmother did truly love the child. Also, Susanna was awarded visitation rights, so she would still be in Tyler's life. So, while I am sympathetic with Susanna, I cannot buy the premise that her motive was unselfish. She was thinking of her own feelings, not what was in her child's best interest.

Having gotten that off my chest, I will reiterate that this book is a page-turner. It's got some interesting characters and has some suspense. I give it four stars.
